Black Capped Conures
Pyrrhura rupicola
Size: 9" long
Weight: Around 70-80
Lifespan: On average, they live 15-20 years, but can live up to 30 with good care
Noise Level: Sometimes noisy, but quieter than most other parrots, like the Green Cheek Conure
Suitable for Apartment Living: Yes
Much like Green Cheek conures, the playful Black-capped Conures entertain those around them with their antics and humorous personality. Though not as well known or as readily available as the green cheek, these beautiful birds are becoming more recognized by others, and for their own right. Unlike the green cheek, they sport a neckline of triangular black-and-white feathers that contrast against the emerald green of their body. They are also calmer than green cheeks. However, this does not take away from their amazing personality! Because of their quieter voice and smaller size, they are suited for apartment living. Black-capped conures are sociable birds, and the majority love meeting and interacting with a variety of people. They can even get along with children, though care and supervision must be taken so both parrot and child remain safe and happy in their interactions. Many enjoy playing with a variety of toys and eating fruits, vegetables, and nuts of all kinds. They have the ability to learn a variety of tricks and be trained, and are especially eager when provided a delicious reward for their efforts! They are capable of learning and speaking a couple of words, though it is not as proficient as other parrot species. Black-capped conures tend to enjoy head scratches, snuggling, and time with those they love. If you are looking for a beautiful, smart, and comical companion, the black-capped conure may be right for you!

These beautiful birds are one of the most well known conures to aviculture and the general public. Their bright colors make them look as if they are fragments of the sun itself! The Sun conure is an active companion who wows people with its intelligence, beauty, and hilarious antics. They are energetic and comical, always loving a new adventure and exploring. Much like other conures, they have the ability to learn a variety of tricks and be trained, and are especially eager when provided a delicious reward for their efforts! They are capable of learning and speaking a couple of words, though it is not as proficient as other parrot species. Sun conures tend to be on the louder side and love to compete with the sounds of their environment, but are very sociable birds, and the majority love meeting and interacting with a variety of people. Care should be taken if a child is around a Sun conure, as their energetic movements could spook a child. Sadly, Sun conures are not suited for apartment living due to their loud vocalizations. Thankfully, with training, they can be taught to be quiet on occasion. Many enjoy playing with a variety of toys and eating fruits, vegetables, and nuts of all kinds. Sun conures enjoy spending time with their owners, whether walking around their living space or receiving a head massage. If you are looking for a stunningly beautiful, smart, and energetic companion, the Sun conure may be right for you!

If you are looking for a larger conure with a better speaking ability, be sure to check out the Blue crowned conure! These parrots became popular after the movie 'Paulie' was released in the 1980s. The movie featured a smart, talking parrot who adventured around the world. Much like the parrot in the movie "Paulie," these active, sociable parrots will want to explore and spend lots of time with their owner. Being in the conure family, they can enjoy meeting and interacting with a variety of people. Due to them being one of the more gentle large parrots, they have the potential to get along with children, however, care must always be taken when a child is around. Sadly, Blue crowned conures are not suited for apartment living due to their loud vocalizations. They have the ability to learn a variety of tricks, and be trained, and are especially eager when provided a delicious reward for their efforts! They are also better at talking than most other conures, and they have the potential to learn several phrases and many words throughout their life. Some owners even state the Blue crowned conure may be the smartest of all conure species! Many enjoy playing with a variety of toys and eating fruits, vegetables, and nuts of all kinds. These beautiful birds enjoy snuggling with their owner and spending time with them. If you are looking for a smart, social companion, the Blue crowned conure may be right for you!
